According to the CDC, in 2021, 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless. More than 1 in 5 (22%) students seriously considered attempting suicide that same year. More young people are reporting mental health symptoms today than ever before.
Ever wonder:
* What it's like to experience mental health illness?
* What causes mental health illness?
* What the symptoms of mental illness are?
* How mental illness is treated?
* How mental illness affects someone's life after treatment.
This two-part documentary presented by Ken Burns answers these questions and gives an in-depth look into the lives of several young people experiencing mental health illnesses.
Episode 1: The Storm (1:55:39): This first two-hour episode of Hiding in Plain Sight, focuses on more than twenty young people who provide an intimate look at what it’s like to experience the symptoms of mental illness, from depression to addiction to suicide ideation. The film includes insights from families, providers, and advocates and explores the impact of childhood trauma, stigma, and social media.
Episode 2: Resilience (1:52:12): In this second episode of Hiding in Plain Sight, our “heroes” speak about finding help and inpatient and/or outpatient treatment. It also explores the criminalization of mental illness, tragedy of youth suicide, and “double stigma” that occurs when mental illness is combined with racial or gender discrimination. Throughout, the interviewees demonstrate the power of resiliency and hope.
